How do I know if I’m feeling anxious?

The physical symptoms of anxiety are usually more obvious than those of other emotions. When you’re anxious, practically every organ in your body is on code red. Your pulse and thoughts race, your heart beats faster, your legs get shaky, your mouth becomes dry, and your chest tightens. In fact, you may feel anxious long before you’re able to tack a label on this constellation of physical sensations. You’re wound up, your thoughts leap about like Mexican jumping beans, you can’t focus on anything for long, or are edgy having people around. Waiting for something to happen while simultaneously dreading it—that’s anxiety too.

Many people experience anxiety as irritation, impatience, or anger, which is stoked by underlying feelings of helplessness and a desire for control. Your mind may time-travel into the future, speculating, What if this? What if that? in an attempt to make things “right” when you get there. Or you may repeatedly mull over troubling actions or situations from your past in a futile attempt to get them to play out differently.

Other, more chronic signs of anxiety include:

insomnia

inability to concentrate

fatigue and exhaustion when you haven’t been particularly physically active

being accident prone

breathing difficulties

recurring headaches

muscle soreness

back and neck pain

digestive problems

skin rashes that aren’t due to allergic reactions
